Beyond the Classroom

We believe that education encompasses more than academic achievement and we encourage our pupils to explore co-curricular interests, offering a diverse range of activities and clubs.

Something for everyone

We encourage all our pupils to explore co-curricular interests as part of a balanced education. Our diverse range of activities includes sports like handball, football, and basketball, as well as performing arts, community support, and many other options. Pupils can engage in chess, debating, drama, electronics, makerspace, folk group, sound production, Rhythm & Soul, photography, film, Eco Schools, and charity fundraising. With a club for everyone and new ones forming every year, there’s always an opportunity to get involved.

Young Enterprise

The Young Enterprise Programme allows students to establish and manage their own company over the course of an academic year. Throughout this experience, they gain insights into various business aspects such as market research, finance, sales production or service provision, customer service, and HR. Pupils receive guidance from a volunteer business advisor as they navigate the programme.

At the year’s end, students liquidate the company and present a report and accounts to the YES Board. This culminates in a presentation evening where Glasgow companies compete in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ format for the prestigious title of ‘Best Glasgow Company.’ Additionally, students are invited to take the Young Enterprise exam, in collaboration with Strathclyde Business School.

Duke of Edinburgh

Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provides pupils with immense enjoyment and a sense of achievement, along with an award highly regarded by universities and employers.

Kelvinside Academy offers all three levels of the award: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Typically, students begin with Bronze in S3 and progress to Gold by S6. The most renowned component of the Award is the Expedition, lasting two days at the Bronze level and four days at the Gold level. Additionally, participants must complete three other activities: Volunteering, Skill, and Physical Recreation.

Combined Cadet Force

The CCF (Combined Cadet Force) is a youth organisation supported by the Ministry of Defence, with His Majesty the King serving as its Captain General. In the United Kingdom, the CCF comprises over 250 school contingents, primarily from independent schools.

We operate our own Combined Cadet Force with Royal Navy, Army, and RAF sections. Although it is not a pre-service organisation, it’s a fantastic way for students to develop qualities such as endurance, resourcefulness, self-reliance, responsibility, and leadership, while also instilling a sense of public service.

Membership is compulsory for all S3 pupils with many pupils choosing to remain in the CCF through to S6. CCF activities are directed and managed by a dedicated team of staff and CCF pupils have the opportunity to try flying, sailing, camping, shooting, orienteering, engineering and many other activities.

In addition to a weekly programme of activities, there are opportunities to join numerous adventurous training camps and courses during the holidays and at weekends.
