Senior School

We provide a supportive and encouraging environment for students aged 11-18, focusing on academic excellence, personal growth, and a broad range of extracurricular activities.

Blending academia with innovation

At Kelvinside Academy’s Senior School, we blend a varied and in-depth curriculum with an innovative approach to teaching and learning. Our mission is to challenge and inspire students, developing their potential and confidence whilst nurturing a love for learning. We emphasise independence, organisational skills, and a strong work ethic, preparing pupils for both Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) exams and life beyond the classroom.  We set high expectations of pupils not only in terms of their work ethic but also in terms of their intellectual ambition.

Our teachers not only inform and instil knowledge but also look to enrich and encourage curiosity and intrigue, preparing pupils for a world full of uncertainty and opportunity through a rich and diverse curriculum.

Our Philosophy

Every seat is a front row seat
Our School is located on one site, ensuring a seamless and cohesive educational experience. With around 630 pupils, our size promotes a strong sense of community and leads to every child being recognised and well known to each other and to staff.
Pastoral Care
Pupil wellbeing is the core of everything we do. Our pastoral care system is at the heart of our school, allowing us to nurture the individual qualities, aptitudes and personalities of every pupil.
Innovation
Teaching at our Innovation School is focused on real-world challenges and collaborative problem-solving, rather than exams and results. It provides exactly the right creative environment for our young people to push the boundaries of their curiosity and learn through failure, as much as success.

Academic Overview

At Kelvinside, pupils from S1 to S6 engage in a comprehensive academic programme, preparing them for Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) exams at National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher levels. Our curriculum balances broad education with in-depth study, allowing students to discover their interests early and specialise later.
  • Expressive Arts

Our Expressive Arts programme is a vibrant and dynamic part of the curriculum where pupils can engage in a variety of creative disciplines including Music, Music Technology, Art, Drama, and Photography. We offer specialised teaching, numerous performance opportunities, and access to a variety of technologies. Whether it’s learning instruments, participating in art exhibitions, or performing in the annual school show, we encourage students to develop their creativity and confidence.

  • Languages

Our Languages Faculty offers an enriching curriculum in both English and Modern Languages (French and Spanish) where pupils develop language skills through a plethora of methods, including literature, history, and film.

In English, work centres around developing each pupil’s language skills so they can express their own thoughts and feelings clearly, both orally and in writing. Our approach to the certification stage is innovative; we ensure, insofar as is possible, that pupils retain the same teacher in S4 and S5 – the two most common certificate stages. This approach reinforces continuity and allows teachers to build optimum working relationships with pupils when they are needed most.

Pupils can choose from French and/or Spanish in S1.  They then continue with their first foreign language up until the end of S4.  A second language can be selected for National 5, and a very large number continue to Higher and Advanced Higher.  Pupils are encouraged not to view languages in isolation, and cross-curricular activities include the use of ICT in the classroom. The Department also organises trips and exchanges to France and Spain.

  • Social & Business Studies

Our Social & Business Studies programme offers students a rich blend of subjects including History, Geography, Modern Studies, Business Studies, Economics, Enterprise and RMPS (Religious, Moral, and Philosophical Studies). The curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills through hands-on learning and real-world applications. From exploring global issues to engaging in fieldwork and ethical debates, pupils are encouraged to think independently and collaboratively.

  • Maths science & technology

Our Maths, Science and Technology courses are exciting, engaging, and have real-life implications in the world we live in today. Through Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computing our pupils develop valuable interdisciplinary skills in problem solving, logical thinking and numeracy, all of which are vital in the workplace.

65% of pupils beginning School today will work in jobs which don’t exist yet; making sure our Senior pupils are prepared for our ever-changing digital and technological world is very important to us, and this is reflected in the curriculum.

  • PE & GAMES

We encourage our pupils to take part in a wide range of sports and physical exercise. Students can participate in traditional team games like rugby, hockey, and cricket, with opportunities for additional sports such as handball, athletics, shooting, and tennis. We offer excellent facilities, including a fitness gym, dance studio, expansive playing fields and shooting range. Pupils are encouraged to develop leadership skills and sportsmanship while enjoying physical activities both in regular classes and extracurricular sessions.

There are opportunities for rugby and hockey scholarship places – more details can be found here.

  • Innovation School

Our Innovation School provides all our pupils with an innovation-focused experience. The work pupils engage in within the Innovation School involves navigating the messiness of the creative process from inception to completion by prototyping and testing.  Pupils are set a challenge, problem to solve or product to design.  They are challenged to learn in new ways: analytical thinkers are inspired to explore their creative selves, while creative learners expand their capacity to think and learn analytically. We focus on hands-on problem solving, encourage an inventive culture, promote peer teaching and learning, and cultivate pupils’ curiosity.

Our older pupils from S3-S6 can select Innovation as one of their subject choices – separate from the usual National 5 or Higher subjects.

S6 Experience

The S6 Experience at Kelvinside prepares students for life beyond school with advanced coursework, leadership opportunities, and a dedicated S6 Centre. Students gain independence, develop key skills, and participate in activities that enhance their readiness for higher education and beyond!

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond academics, we offer a rich array of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and community service. These opportunities help students develop leadership skills, discover new passions, and build lasting friendships, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
